Hopefully this is also the place to note that I don't really feel you need to ask me before podficcing, remixing, critiqueing, translating, or making art based on my stuff (although I'd love it if you'd share a link to the end result!). Consider this blanket permission. I will do my best to use warnings appropriately, but do absolutely let me know if I have failed to warn when I should have, and feel free to ask me if you aren't sure whether something of mine is safely viewable for you; my DW forwarding email address is on my profile.
a dream, which was not all a dream.
Jan. 23rd, 2012 08:39 amUuuuuuugh.
GOOD: I came randomly unblocked, and the exceptionally belated chapter of LttE is now over twelve thousand words long! I am caught up on OUaT and Burn Notice! I accidentally wrote a whole bunch of something that will never see the light of day but is still really satisfying!
BAD: I am sick. Said sickness has caused me to miss a professional conference I was supposed to attend with my boss, who is presumably now aware that I am a FAILBOAT, and if I do not get better by Wednesday, I pretty much have to go in anyway, because it is getting far too close to crunch time on a major event for the year and I am one of the people with some serious heavy lifting to do. This weekend has been pretty awful and this week is only going to be awfuler, most likely.
In conclusion: uuuuuuugh. I am going back to sleep.

So! I utterly failed at More Joy Day, but the weather didn't - even if it's raining today, it SNOWED yesterday, all is forgiven - and
idriya didn't, either! I am in awe of her persistence; it has been over a year since I accidentally wrote almost 20k about the vanished mothers of A:tLA, and she steadily produced portraits for every single woman!
( The final four: Kang Mashei, An Li, Lady Ilah, and Yue. )
:D :D :D :D :D Flying Blossoms was actually kind of difficult for me to write, because what it basically amounts to is TINY TINY pieces of a couple dozen AUs and backstory fics, and so if I had not had
idriya to talk me down, they would each have been 200k and none of them would be finished. /o\ But she rewarded me, as always, with some really gorgeous artwork. ♥♥♥♥♥

Jan. 6th, 2012 08:49 amDrive-by update to say: I should absolutely not be doing this, considering I just got all those big bangs and Yuletide off my plate, but! I've put up a fic offer at
help_mindanao, in case anyone has anything left after end-of-year giving - or is interested in making an offer. I haven't even taken a good look at the rest of the comments yet, but more offers are always good! (And there are also offers in other media, it's not just fic.)
and, half-suspected, animate the whole.
Jan. 4th, 2012 11:29 amThrough a combination of growing disdain for my own fail and the need to track words obsessively for
inkingitout, I sat down on Monday and wrote several thousand words. \o/ Apparently word tracking makes me competitive against ... my own laziness? IDEK. But progress occurred, is the point!
The other significant event of 2012 for me is that I hurt myself. It is extremely cold here, and earlier this week the road was covered in ice, so of course I fell down, though thankfully the car that precipitated my loss of balance did not hit me. My knee is turning gorgeous colors, and you never realize how much you use the muscles in your armpit until you strain them and suddenly a million actions hurt. AWESOME START.
But! There have been Netflixen, and also a trip to the movies.
( On the Other Hand, Death. Spoilers! ) I added another to my queue, though I forget which, and hope to work my way through them all.
( Inkheart, because my queue is all 2008 all the time. Also spoilery. ) Not bad, precisely, but it didn't quite seem finished. Maybe the script needed to go through a couple more drafts or something.
And then also
idriya and I went to see Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows. Which had ( some things in it that I quite enjoyed ... )
( ... and some things that I did not. )
Quite a text wall there, but: ALL THE FEELINGS. Honestly, it's a good thing I had the chance to get my thoughts in order the other day, or everything behind that cut would probably just have said AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH.

Jan. 1st, 2012 08:47 pmLazy day? THE LAZIEST DAY. I did not get up until eleven, that is how much of a slug I am, and I was useless all day. Good start to 2012!

I am not organized enough for a proper recs post, but! I also betaed all three of

It has been raining all evening. This is not acceptable, January. I realize this is your first day, but WINTER MORE BETTER.

Dec. 26th, 2011 10:13 amSo, ha, I fail. /o\ I hope everyone, with or without a holiday to celebrate during this part of the year, has an excellent time - and enjoys the VAST BOUNTY OF YULETIDE. :D
The bad: I did not in fact finish that next chapter of LttE by Christmas. The auxiliary good: I do have nearly 7k words of it! I am still working on it! /o\
The bad: I only finished one of the stories I planned for Yuletide. :( The auxiliary good: my recipient seems wonderfully pleased with the one I managed to get finished! (The slight wrinkle in the AO3 makes it BLATANTLY OBVIOUS which story I wrote, if you make even a little effort to figure it out, so if you want to preserve the spirit of author reveals, don't make any effort!) So I have once again failed to ruin Yuletide forever. \o/ I posted the story at like two in the morning on Christmas, and then spent the next three hours staring at the ceiling in my bedroom and accidentally thinking of things I really ought to edit before story reveals. The resultant lack of sleep was actually a really good thing, because at one of the places my father and I went caroling in the morning, I was the only soprano, and I could never in a million years have sung aloud alone if I had been firing on all cylinders. \o?
But enough nattering, there are Yuletide stories to read!

So where did that two weeks just go? D: Yikes. I am glad it is at least properly cold now; all that remains is for it to snow a little bit more than this incredibly pathetic inch-ish we have right now, and then it'll actually feel like December, instead of November being clingy. And oh, god, the Christmas presents I need to buy. DDDDDDDDDD:
But, okay, before I get distracted yet again: media exists! And sometimes I consume it! Spoilers abound.
( Last week's Closer. )
( Last week's R&I. )
( This week's Once Upon a Time. )
I also skittered off my reading list once again and devoured ( The Magicians and Mrs. Quent. )
I think that's everything? My most recent Netflix is a Donald Strachey movie, which I have not yet watched but fully expect to like; and of course there is Yuletide. The odds are heavily against me finishing all three of the treats that I've started, but hope springs eternal. As does my verbosity, because at least two of them are over the minimum already. /o\
I have also started The Secret Circle, but considering I've only watched an ep and a bit, I can't really say much about it yet. Except that I had never truly considered a Twilight/Charmed crossover. Also Faye is gorgeous.

Nov. 28th, 2011 07:27 pmPosting fail, ugh, but I hope everybody to whom it is relevant had a wonderful Thanksgiving, and that everybody more generally had a wonderful Thursday. I am thankful for so many things I could never list them all, so probably it's a good thing that I sort of missed the boat for attempting a long eloquent Thanksgiving post.
Having vacation was AWESOME, and yet, as vacations so often are, it was not long enough. But! I got a bunch of stuff done, if not everything I'd hoped to get done.
First:
50,217 / 50,000 words. 100.0% done!
\o/! I have no idea what I'm going to do with this thing, but there are WAY better odds than usual that I'm going to finish it, simply because I (still) somehow don't hate it. I mean, it's clunky and kind of awkward and there's probably continuity errors eeeeeeverywhere, but that's okay! I wrote a thing! \o/!
Second: I finished ( Infidel (Kameron Hurley). Spoilery! ) I should stop pretending I can analyze these books at all, because I really can't. I am way too invested. ♥ The third one is probably going to wreck me.
And, speaking ofme crying emotional overinvestment, I also watched ( Sucker Punch. Spoilers, of course. ) Broke my heart and only stitched it about halfway back together again.
And also I should not forget: I stayed up late one night and blew through ( Changes (Dresden Files). Spoilery! ) I still want to find out what happens, so I'm hoping this was just - a blip. A, like, four-hundred-page-long blip. D:
And now I am going to prep to watch as much of The Closer as possible before going to bed early, because the last thing I need right now is to get sick.

Nov. 16th, 2011 09:24 pmI cast my OTW election ballot this morning, and just wanted to add something to my last post, because rydra_wong has a point: I also am so so grateful to the people who came forward this election cycle and shared experiences that must have been really difficult to share - for many reasons, but in part because their willingness to do that allowed me to vote with a level of thought and care and deliberation that would not have been possible otherwise. My profession of love toward the OTW was not meant to invalidate those posts. Re: just about everything else, the_shoshanna is more articulate than I could ever be.
There's no way to segue from that to a squeeful book review gracefully, so I'm just going to go for it. ( Blackdog, by KV Johansen. ) I would like ALL THE FIC to fill in the timeskips and backstories plzkthx. By which I mean I'll probably acquire my own epic headcanon without even trying.
Which brings me to: yaaaaaaay Yuletide! :D :D :D :D :D
Oh, and:
28,953 / 50,000 words. 57.9% done!
I need to stop talking about how well this is going, or I'm going to jinx myself.

Okay, now to slightly less fraught things. I am caught up on Burn Notice but have nothing to say, except TEAM, TEAM ON MY SCREEN, and also MADELINE YAY. And I watched Once Upon a Time in real time for once. ( Spoilery, of course. )
And! I finished Blackdog, but should probably hold off on the actual review until I have the book in front of me again. (Short version: I definitely enjoyed it! :D)

Nov. 9th, 2011 11:33 amHonestly? I'm a little weirded out by how well this NaNo is going. Maybe it's because I slept for shit all weekend (parents gone to Maine = I was the one stuck getting up to let the cat in at two in the morning) and I shouldn't be reading ANYTHING right now, but so far I am keeping up on the wordcount and I don't hate it? I don't even know how that's possible. o_O I think I did myself a favor not outlining all that strictly, because it means I don't have to revise the outline much when I change something, or write something I wasn't expecting to write. But, seriously. This is weird.
Anyway! I caught up yesterday on ( Once Upon a Time. Spoilers. ) Still recording this one.
Also, over the weekend I had a little spare time and watched ( Dragon Hunters (2008). Also some spoilers. ) I went to the AO3 right after I finished it, of course, and I was sort of surprised that I couldn't find anything - I was expecting it to have at least a Yuletide story or two.
So I got sick! Which actually was good timing, in a certain sense, because in between naps that added up to like eighteen hours of yesterday, I actually got pretty far on my NaNo. Sometimes being sick is weirdly facilitating to my writing - somehow it can temporarily lower the barrier between the not-words floating around in my head and the actual words I need to be putting down on the page. \o? Obviously I'm not quite done for today, but I think I can manage another paragraph or two this evening, if I don't just conk out on the couch the second I get home. (It's original fiction; I promised
But! There have been TV shows since last I posted. ( Once Upon a Time. Spoilers, of course. )
I am also watching Prime Suspect, but I have less to say about that except that I like Maria Bello, and also it makes me want to check out the original. I like watching cranky people be cranky and then also do their jobs, and since I am hitting my oversaturation point on most other police shows, it's nice to have one where I haven't had this ep on in the background while reading/eating dinner/writing fic twenty times already.
And Burn Notice is back tonight yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay. ♥♥♥♥♥ Once I hit a certain level of affection for something, I am incapable of ever being objective about it again. Ever.
So we got about four inches of snow, which is way less than a lot of people, and yet we still somehow lost power this weekend - off and on, even, which meant I had to drag myself out of bed at like 5:00 AM yesterday to turn off lights and yet when I woke up for real there was no power. :P
But! It came back on with plenty of time for me to post one of my complements and also my fic for
thelittlebang, although it looks like the fic post is still trapped somewhere in the moderation queue. I tried really hard to not write the same story again, because, let's face it, there are a lot of ways Avatar-the-movie could be improved; but I probably repeated myself at least a little. /o\
But I still feel very accomplished! Two big bangs within a week of each other! Granted, my
genretwisting bingo has fallen by the wayside; one story, I'm trashing and replacing with something else, and the other grew a zombie army and is 16k and climbing, so there's no way I'm going to get that done before the deadline of ... um, today, but. I'm still planning to finish them even if it won't "count" officially because I'm a rebel.
NaNo starts tomorrow! OMG I AM EXCITE. :DDDDDDDDD I'm sure there will be angst and pain later, but right before the first of November I am always filled with joy and sunshine and puppies. I have so many things to finish, I really shouldn't be doing it; but it's a tradition! I've done NaNo every year since high school, I can't just not. I am going to be watching the homepage countdown alllllll day.

Art Post - The Blow of a Knife
Oct. 26th, 2011 11:53 amYAY ART YAY! I cannot even tell you how hard
idriya worked on these - I may have mentioned somewhere in my notes that she actually wrapped herself in a sheet to get the cloth in some of these right. That is dedication. I am so, so, so unbelievably lucky to practically have a pet illustrator of my very own, and I owe her big time for all her help and encouragement, whether it comes in the form of gorgeous digital paintings or incredibly irritating nagging about when I'm going to send her more fic. ♥♥♥♥♥ Best sister ever.
But, onwards: art! She did six pictures, each of one character as one of the cards in Gaius Helen's tarot deck. HOW COOL IS THAT.

( Bigger versions of all six below the cut! )
If I did not have to work I would spend all day staring at them with cartoon hearts in my eyes! How so awesome?

flash'd as they turn'd in air.
Oct. 25th, 2011 09:49 amYAY I DIDN'T FORGET TO POST YAY. \o/ I put a reminder in my calendar and everything, ugh, I was so nervous. :P Though the general drift of the story is, um, my usual (male character bites it, ladies everywhere, happy endings all around), it's kind of different stylistically - more serious, and probably more pretentious. D: But I think it turned out okay, and, bonus, I really like the title. (I hate titling things.)
idriya is making absolutely BEAUTIFUL art, which I temporarily have all to myself because she's a perfectionist and insists that it's not done yet. But it should be up soon, and I will definitely link to it (less likely) or post it myself (far more likely, because
idriya is lazy that way unless it's my birthday).
... **starts planning for
ladiesbigbang Round 2.5**
And
thelittlebang is having another extension! It's awful that the mods are having RL difficulties, but I can't say I'm not grateful for the extra time to prod my draft, because this story's sort of huge and I'm still not sure the pacing's quite right.
But! I watched ( the pilot of Once Upon a Time. ) I set the TV up to record this one, so even if I forget when it's on I should be able to keep up pretty easily.
... I really will try to get a chapter of LttE out before Christmas, I swear.

Fic Post - The Blow of a Knife
Oct. 24th, 2011 07:52 pmTitle: The Blow of a Knife
Fandom: Children of Dune (2003 miniseries)
Rating: PGish? Some attempted violence, some achieved violence, but all of it is either brief or inexplicit. Or both.
Characters/Pairing: Ensemble: Chani, Irulan, Alia, Jessica, Duncan 2.0, plus assorted minor canon characters and an OC or two. Canonical past relationships, hints of Alia/Duncan 2.0, and in my head the whole thing has come to serve as pre-Chani/Irulan but that could just be me.
Wordcount: 21,000.
Summary: Chani feels it, when Muad'dib dies. Midseries AU: the attempt to assassinate Paul with the stoneburner is successful. Written for Round 2 of
ladiesbigbang. (Also @ AO3.)
Disclaimer: Places and people you recognize from canon are not mine. Some scenes diverge only a little, so some dialogue (particularly when Jessica first meets Duncan 2.0) is essentially from the miniseries. Title from the first quote below, which appears in Dune, I believe.
Acknowledgements: Thanks immensely to
idriya, who tells me things I don't want to hear even though I'm whiny and horrible to her after, and whom I hear spent a lot of time wrapped in a sheet to complete my beautiful complement art - which is unfortunately delayed due to RL issues, but I will embed/link when it's finished! And, of course, the impetus to write and complete this story came from the
ladiesbigbang challenge, which is great and awesome and great and everyone should sign up for it. :D

Oct. 17th, 2011 02:14 pmSo, in terms of my to-do list, this weekend was TOTAL FAIL and I don't want to talk about it. :P
But! I did lots of RL things, including a volunteer shift at a local clothes sale and making (more) brownies and having lunch with K, and also saw movies!
( Moneyball (aka that baseball movie that I'd heard was kind of good). )
And then my mother's Netflix was ( X-Men: First Class. Which is old news by this point, but cut just in case. )
Mostly, it didn't surprise me much at all; thanks to fandom osmosis, I knew a lot going in. (My mother: "-and Kevin Bacon was good-" Me: "Kevin Bacon's in this?!" My mother: "Yeah, he's the Nazi guy-" Me: "Shaw, Mom. His name's Shaw." My mother: "I thought you hadn't seen this.") Sometimes I wonder why I don't just give up on source material entirely, and interact with media solely through fandom - some things would be so much easier! I would probably like all the characters better!
And then the sequel to God's War arrives in the mail, and I remember. \o/ YAY THIS IS PROBABLY GOING TO BREAK MY HEART YAY.

Oct. 11th, 2011 10:16 amHow is it Tuesday already WHAT. D: The end of last week was, like, the least relaxing Friday I have EVER had - Thursday night involved traversing a road that hates me, on foot, to find a place that would copy a document which I discovered on Friday had been missing a page, and needed to be picked up Saturday morning, only for the person who wanted them to find that, erroneously, the cover was in black-and-white instead of color. :P (Not a fatal problem, but he was not happy.)
And then I had a
daemonelix for the weekend! Which was AWESOME, obvs., but not conducive to my usual relaxing sit-around-doing-nothing routine - we made brownies and took a good long walk and went kayaking. So yesterday was actually the do-nothing-iest day for me. Our school does not have "Columbus Day" off, precisely; but there was a local fair, and all the kids were there for the day, which meant I could sit in my office with the lights off and spend eight hours double-checking the parent-student directory and getting it ready for the printer. Good times.
BUT. There are still a whole bunch of things I need ( to do. )
I am buying myself so much candy for Halloween.

sweet colors of fall drift down.
Oct. 5th, 2011 12:39 pmUggggggggh I am such a failboat - it's like I have some kind of quota for fannish activity. I haven't been posting consistently AT ALL, but I've finished(ish) both of my big bangs, I'm working furiously on my two remaining
genretwisting bingo squares (YAY EXTENSION YAY), and I have three wallpapers to finish. D: This is almost the most pathetic my posting frequency has ever gotten, and yet I don't think I've ever interacted with so many fannish people at once, independent of replying to comments on fic. It's kind of blowing my mind.
God I hope these wallpapers turn out okay.
But! We still haven't quite run out of our movie channel free trial time, and I happened across I Am Number Four the other day, and I don't even know but I sort of loved it? ( I have no idea whether anyone even cares about spoilers for this, but just in case. ) I do not even a little bit need any more fics to write right now, but I am SO GLAD I taped this movie. (Why is my taste in movies so irrational? /o\)
Judging by reaction posts I've spoiled myself with, I should be glad I've drifted away from 5-0, or at least its source material - fandom usually makes me happier than canon anyway, but sometimes the difference can be very dramaticSG:A I AM LOOKING AT YOU.
And to end on a very mundane note: I successfully went to the dentist! By myself! And after calling them on the phone to check the time of my appointment! (I realize this sounds ridiculous, but: anxiety. It was in the midafternoon, so I was about an inch from hurling for a lot of yesterday.)

solitude, emptiness, gardens.
Sep. 26th, 2011 09:56 amUgh, long week was incredibly long, which would be why I sat around and did nothing but war on the UK this weekend. Victoria is such a beautiful, beautiful time-waster; I am the furthest I have ever gotten now that I have reached the 1870s and begun producing telephones, and I won a chunk of Canada and part of Ulster and I feel SO ACCOMPLISHED. ( Probably this is not interesting to anyone but me! ) Plus I think it's making me better at geography.
But! More importantly, my
ladiesbigbang is just about ready to go, and I turned in my first draft for
thelittlebang, even if it still needs editing. Both of them are at least twice as long as they were supposed to be, and I'm probably going to need at least a couple more weeks for the next chapter of LttE; but overall I feel pretty okay. Which is great, because when I signed up I was kind of figuring two big bangs at once would make my head explode. :D
Which, by the by:
thelittlebang complement signups are open, and aside from my ridiculous porn-free epic, there are ten fics in ten fandoms (CW RPF! Hanna! My Little Pony! Glee! Power Rangers! ST:TNG/DS9/VOY!) that are eligible and indubitably deserving of art - if anyone happens to have time to put together a wallpaper, short vid, collage, what have you, signups are @ LJ | @ DW. I'll have to take a look around my caps folder and see whether I could pull together cover art, or maybe a wallpaper ...
