Through a combination of growing disdain for my own fail and the need to track words obsessively for [community profile] inkingitout, I sat down on Monday and wrote several thousand words. \o/ Apparently word tracking makes me competitive against ... my own laziness? IDEK. But progress occurred, is the point!

The other significant event of 2012 for me is that I hurt myself. It is extremely cold here, and earlier this week the road was covered in ice, so of course I fell down, though thankfully the car that precipitated my loss of balance did not hit me. My knee is turning gorgeous colors, and you never realize how much you use the muscles in your armpit until you strain them and suddenly a million actions hurt. AWESOME START.

But! There have been Netflixen, and also a trip to the movies.

On the Other Hand, Death. Spoilers! ) I added another to my queue, though I forget which, and hope to work my way through them all.

Inkheart, because my queue is all 2008 all the time. Also spoilery. ) Not bad, precisely, but it didn't quite seem finished. Maybe the script needed to go through a couple more drafts or something.

And then also [personal profile] idriya and I went to see Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows. Which had some things in it that I quite enjoyed ... )

... and some things that I did not. )

Quite a text wall there, but: ALL THE FEELINGS. Honestly, it's a good thing I had the chance to get my thoughts in order the other day, or everything behind that cut would probably just have said AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH.

So we got about four inches of snow, which is way less than a lot of people, and yet we still somehow lost power this weekend - off and on, even, which meant I had to drag myself out of bed at like 5:00 AM yesterday to turn off lights and yet when I woke up for real there was no power. :P

But! It came back on with plenty of time for me to post one of my complements and also my fic for [community profile] thelittlebang, although it looks like the fic post is still trapped somewhere in the moderation queue. I tried really hard to not write the same story again, because, let's face it, there are a lot of ways Avatar-the-movie could be improved; but I probably repeated myself at least a little. /o\

But I still feel very accomplished! Two big bangs within a week of each other! Granted, my [community profile] genretwisting bingo has fallen by the wayside; one story, I'm trashing and replacing with something else, and the other grew a zombie army and is 16k and climbing, so there's no way I'm going to get that done before the deadline of ... um, today, but. I'm still planning to finish them even if it won't "count" officially because I'm a rebel.

NaNo starts tomorrow! OMG I AM EXCITE. :DDDDDDDDD I'm sure there will be angst and pain later, but right before the first of November I am always filled with joy and sunshine and puppies. I have so many things to finish, I really shouldn't be doing it; but it's a tradition! I've done NaNo every year since high school, I can't just not. I am going to be watching the homepage countdown alllllll day.
damkianna: A cap of the Reverend Mother from the Dune miniseries, with accompanying text: "Space cowgirl." (Default)
YAY I DIDN'T FORGET TO POST YAY. \o/ I put a reminder in my calendar and everything, ugh, I was so nervous. :P Though the general drift of the story is, um, my usual (male character bites it, ladies everywhere, happy endings all around), it's kind of different stylistically - more serious, and probably more pretentious. D: But I think it turned out okay, and, bonus, I really like the title. (I hate titling things.) [personal profile] idriya is making absolutely BEAUTIFUL art, which I temporarily have all to myself because she's a perfectionist and insists that it's not done yet. But it should be up soon, and I will definitely link to it (less likely) or post it myself (far more likely, because [personal profile] idriya is lazy that way unless it's my birthday).

... **starts planning for [community profile] ladiesbigbang Round 2.5**

And [community profile] thelittlebang is having another extension! It's awful that the mods are having RL difficulties, but I can't say I'm not grateful for the extra time to prod my draft, because this story's sort of huge and I'm still not sure the pacing's quite right.

But! I watched the pilot of Once Upon a Time. ) I set the TV up to record this one, so even if I forget when it's on I should be able to keep up pretty easily.

... I really will try to get a chapter of LttE out before Christmas, I swear.
damkianna: A cap of the Reverend Mother from the Dune miniseries, with accompanying text: "Space cowgirl." (Default)
How is it Tuesday already WHAT. D: The end of last week was, like, the least relaxing Friday I have EVER had - Thursday night involved traversing a road that hates me, on foot, to find a place that would copy a document which I discovered on Friday had been missing a page, and needed to be picked up Saturday morning, only for the person who wanted them to find that, erroneously, the cover was in black-and-white instead of color. :P (Not a fatal problem, but he was not happy.)

And then I had a [personal profile] daemonelix for the weekend! Which was AWESOME, obvs., but not conducive to my usual relaxing sit-around-doing-nothing routine - we made brownies and took a good long walk and went kayaking. So yesterday was actually the do-nothing-iest day for me. Our school does not have "Columbus Day" off, precisely; but there was a local fair, and all the kids were there for the day, which meant I could sit in my office with the lights off and spend eight hours double-checking the parent-student directory and getting it ready for the printer. Good times.

BUT. There are still a whole bunch of things I need to do. )

I am buying myself so much candy for Halloween.
damkianna: A cap of the Reverend Mother from the Dune miniseries, with accompanying text: "Space cowgirl." (Default)
Uggggggggh I am such a failboat - it's like I have some kind of quota for fannish activity. I haven't been posting consistently AT ALL, but I've finished(ish) both of my big bangs, I'm working furiously on my two remaining [community profile] genretwisting bingo squares (YAY EXTENSION YAY), and I have three wallpapers to finish. D: This is almost the most pathetic my posting frequency has ever gotten, and yet I don't think I've ever interacted with so many fannish people at once, independent of replying to comments on fic. It's kind of blowing my mind.

God I hope these wallpapers turn out okay.

But! We still haven't quite run out of our movie channel free trial time, and I happened across I Am Number Four the other day, and I don't even know but I sort of loved it? I have no idea whether anyone even cares about spoilers for this, but just in case. ) I do not even a little bit need any more fics to write right now, but I am SO GLAD I taped this movie. (Why is my taste in movies so irrational? /o\)

Judging by reaction posts I've spoiled myself with, I should be glad I've drifted away from 5-0, or at least its source material - fandom usually makes me happier than canon anyway, but sometimes the difference can be very dramatic SG:A I AM LOOKING AT YOU.

And to end on a very mundane note: I successfully went to the dentist! By myself! And after calling them on the phone to check the time of my appointment! (I realize this sounds ridiculous, but: anxiety. It was in the midafternoon, so I was about an inch from hurling for a lot of yesterday.)
damkianna: A cap of the Reverend Mother from the Dune miniseries, with accompanying text: "Space cowgirl." (Default)
Ugh, long week was incredibly long, which would be why I sat around and did nothing but war on the UK this weekend. Victoria is such a beautiful, beautiful time-waster; I am the furthest I have ever gotten now that I have reached the 1870s and begun producing telephones, and I won a chunk of Canada and part of Ulster and I feel SO ACCOMPLISHED. Probably this is not interesting to anyone but me! ) Plus I think it's making me better at geography.

But! More importantly, my [community profile] ladiesbigbang is just about ready to go, and I turned in my first draft for [community profile] thelittlebang, even if it still needs editing. Both of them are at least twice as long as they were supposed to be, and I'm probably going to need at least a couple more weeks for the next chapter of LttE; but overall I feel pretty okay. Which is great, because when I signed up I was kind of figuring two big bangs at once would make my head explode. :D

Which, by the by: [community profile] thelittlebang complement signups are open, and aside from my ridiculous porn-free epic, there are ten fics in ten fandoms (CW RPF! Hanna! My Little Pony! Glee! Power Rangers! ST:TNG/DS9/VOY!) that are eligible and indubitably deserving of art - if anyone happens to have time to put together a wallpaper, short vid, collage, what have you, signups are @ LJ | @ DW. I'll have to take a look around my caps folder and see whether I could pull together cover art, or maybe a wallpaper ...
damkianna: A cap of the Reverend Mother from the Dune miniseries, with accompanying text: "Space cowgirl." (Default)
Uggggggggggggh my god last week. I didn't even have to work Saturday the way I did last year, and I still did nothing this weekend but lie on the couch and slowly regenerate my brainpower. (Well, and wash my car, but that was under duress.) Late chapter will be late; apologies! /o\ I'm actually really really glad [community profile] thelittlebang is having an extension - I mean, I hope nothing additional goes wrong for either mod and that everything works out well, but it's a lucky break for me.

Unsurprisingly, I missed all my TV - although on Monday that was because we went to see The Debt. Spoilers. )

Also, I bought myself three books the other week, as I mentioned, and one of them was God's War, by Kameron Hurley. ) I already ordered the second book. /o\

But! Now I should get back to work so I can finish everything I need to do and then write like a writing person this evening to get myself back on track.
damkianna: A cap of Sokka and Appa from Avatar: The Last Airbender, with accompanying text: "I CARE ABOUT THIS ALOT." (Stuff like that happens to us a lot.)
I've been going to bed early and sleeping like a rock this week, and yet I feel more tired today than I did on Monday. :P

I missed Burn Notice because my mother's Netflix was extremely long, which I am bummed about; I did catch The Closer, about which I only wish to say I love Sanchez, CAPTAIN RAYDOR YES, and small spoiler! ) Rizzoli and Isles, well. I wash my hands of their ability to plot out a crime whose portrayal and resolution do not make me cringe for one reason or another; I am watching this show for the ladies, Jett Jackson, and the third-to-half of each episode that isn't about the Crime of the Week, and in those respects I enjoyed it relatively well. Another couple spoilers. )

I spent yesterday enforcing consistency - in terms of format and grammar, hence the icon - on our faculty handbook, which included redoing the table of contents with revised page numbers twice. I hate page numbers. D:<

And it looks like I spoke too soon when it comes to thunderstorms dropping trees on my bedroom; I think I may sleep downstairs when Irene hits us, just in case. And I should probably kiss the power and the internet goodbye for the weekend, unless we get reeeeeeally lucky - which means I'd better post my [community profile] genretwisting bingo fic tonight.
damkianna: A cap of the Reverend Mother from the Dune miniseries, with accompanying text: "Space cowgirl." (Default)
This should not make me as sad as it does, but my TV is broken. (Technically speaking, it's the satellite that broke, since it fell out of the sky and my mother never actually got our dish repointed, but.) It will not be fixed until at least tomorrow! :((((( So no Burn Notice for me, at least not right away, and also I missed The Closer and R&I. :((((((((((((

But! I have 150% of my [community profile] ladiesbigbang wordcount achieved, and, much more importantly, the end of the story is actually visible from here. \o/ I mean, of course I could make it longer - but I don't have to, I can totally tie up all the plot threads I started with and leave the rest be. Trudy and Grace are still coming along nicely, and I am making at least a little progress in small increments on everything else.

I'd say it's a good thing my TV is out, except that will never ever be true. TVVVVVVVVV *sob*
damkianna: A cap of the Reverend Mother from the Dune miniseries, with accompanying text: "Space cowgirl." (Default)
I adore Tiny Dog (yeah, that's still her name) but her habit of barking at 5:30 is THE ANTITHESIS OF CHARMING. >:E I'm sure that it's not the only reason I'm still annoyingly tired, but I bet it isn't helping. Also, blah blah work. )

But! It hasn't rained yet today, which is a tiny miracle, and I think I have the general direction of the subplots for Book Three sorted out, which is GREAT. Seriously, I am getting all GRRM up in here; I need to sit my fics down and have a talk. Every minor character does not need their own storyline, okay. (And now I sound like a PSA: "When's the last time you talked to your fics about plot kudzu?")

To conclude: I don't precisely like having the office with the window that faces the fire escape, but there's some kind of large-leafed vine growing up it that makes it almost appealing in summer. Also, I can't believe I have to watch Avatar again, but I can't remember the middle (including who's onscreen when, so no transcripts for me) well enough to finish my fic for [community profile] thelittlebang without it. Curse you, James Cameron.
damkianna: A cap of the Reverend Mother from the Dune miniseries, with accompanying text: "Space cowgirl." (Default)
Long week has been so very very long. :P Possibly exacerbated by how I'm still not really at a hundred percent. Stupid lingering sore throat. Also, if I start griping about work this is going to turn into a giant wall of hate, so I will say that I came back from Plague Week to a very full inbox and leave it at that.

On the upside, I should now be successfully signed up for ALL THE THINGS ([community profile] thelittlebang and [community profile] ladiesbigbang, and, of course, [community profile] genretwisting is still in there), and - well. In terms of pure wordcount, I'm pretty sure I'm going to be fine; it'll be finishing the actual story plots that will be the hurdle. D:

I am getting stupidly fond of Trudy and Grace, though. Honestly, they're practically McShep, except for the part where a) they're women and b) canon is not about them and c) they both die. Which, gosh, I wonder how much a) has to do with b) and c)? (Answer: I am trying to avoid giant walls of hate today, so no comment. Except that that would make a kickass fusion AU. Teyla + Trudy = BFFS FOREVER OMG.)

But! For the next few days, I will be concentrating desperately on LttE, in the hope that I can actually get this chapter done. /o\ ugh i am so fail.
damkianna: A cap of Milo from Disney's Atlantis, with accompanying emoticon: "\o/". (\o/)
OMG ANOTHER ROUND OF [community profile] ladiesbigbang YAY. :D :D :D :D

I'd volunteer to help out except I am such a n00b - I could never co-mod, and I wouldn't have the least clue about decent graphics or promotions or anything. (If you do, though, you should let them know! Help bring more ladyfic into the world!)

This and [community profile] thelittlebang and [community profile] genretwisting - what an embarrassment of riches, augh, I feel so spoiled. Clearly I should be working on LttE, and yet the siren song of new outlines is so hard to resist. /o\

Too many fics on the dance floor!
damkianna: A cap of the Reverend Mother from the Dune miniseries, with accompanying text: "Space cowgirl." (Default)
Yesterday was pretty awful; I can neither confirm nor deny that I cried a little in my office. But in this particular case, the thing that went wrong at work isn't my fault - I could have fixed it, if I had been paying more attention, but the underlying problem was not with me. So it could have been worse!

In cheerier news, I saw Thor in 3D twice this weekend, and I have to say, I really enjoyed it. Cut for a lot of talking, and also spoilers. ) Good thing I like it, because I'm probably going to see it at least one more time - the first time was me and [personal profile] idriya, the second was me and my dad, so my mom still hasn't seen it yet.

In the rush to get Chapter 3 finished, I let my [community profile] genretwisting bingo fall a bit by the wayside, but I poked them a little yesterday and I'm pretty sure they're still alive. \o/ Except right now I should be doing work, not writing fic. /o\
damkianna: A cap of the Reverend Mother from the Dune miniseries, with accompanying text: "Space cowgirl." (Default)
I would probably do that AO3 meme that's going around, except ... I haven't even posted ten full fics yet. :P

I blew pretty much the entire weekend making maps for ItO, because, god help me, I just cannot shut off the part of my brain that needs to know everything - even shit that will NEVER EVER make it into the story. D: On the upside, I figured out how to import base files into the mapmaking program so that I can trace the giant continent the Earth Kingdoms are on instead of eyeballing it. (My eyeballing skills are okay, but things still weren't ending up in the right places, which, important for a map, y/y?) Overall, an excellent use of my time.

Also, Sunday night was the Burn Notice movie. I concede that 'Fall of Sam Axe' is a bad title. ) It was not some kind of groundbreakingly amazing movie experience, it was not a two-hour revelation; but it was charming and sweet and a little heartbreaking. FIONA'S MOVIE NEXT PLS. :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

And another [community profile] genretwisting challenge has begun! I think we have a little more time this round, which is great, because it's looking like I have an epic A Little Princess adaptation, a fantasy version of Burn Notice, and maybe an Eagle/Dresden Files fusion on my hands. Plus, of course, the next chapter of LttE, which hopefully will get done on time. **crosses fingers**
damkianna: A cap of the Reverend Mother from the Dune miniseries, with accompanying text: "Space cowgirl." (Default)
Wow, this is like the worst two days at work I have EVER HAD.

Long story short: my old UPS beeped intermittently for like three days, and then on Monday, as I was printing materials for a meeting I have to attend because my supervisor's out, it gave up entirely - my computer abruptly turned off, and the UPS started emitting this utterly brain-piercing EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. Possibly not that short a story - but there's a happy ending! )

Man, tomorrow had better be blissfully uneventful. At least I made it to lunch today - not so, yesterday.

In fic news, Chapter 13 (aka THE EEEEEEEEND YAYAYAYAY of Book One) is going swimmingly; a couple scenes and another few readthroughs, and it'll be ready to post on Sunday. After that, I think I am going to take a short break - I love ItO, I do, and every single comment makes my face stick like this :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD, but I need to give my brain a rest. Plus I have a ton of outlining to do for Book Two. :D

The second [community profile] genretwisting fic is going a tad more slowly - I have immersed myself in sci-fi, but less so in westerns. I sense I'm going to be watching a lot of AMC on Saturday. Also, I am so far behind on H50 it is not even funny. Time to hit the interwebs and see what exceptionally legal video resources I can find.
damkianna: A cap of Zoe from Firefly, with accompanying text: "Yeah, this is gonna go great." (This is gonna go great.)
Not my best morning ever, so far - one of the cats had another seizure, which was quite possibly my fault, as she seems to be triggered by certain kinds of noise; there was some sort of accident on my way in, which meant a brief moment of terror as I was redirected onto a road I have never driven before and needed to navigate back off of; when I made it back onto the right road, there was a giant truck trailer with a house on it maneuvering around, which meant a wait; and then there was a surprise meeting with a technology consultant, which I almost had to do alone because my supervisor was late coming back from a totally different meeting. :P The rest of today had better be boring.

On the upside, [personal profile] idriya and I managed to successfully jumpstart her car all by ourselves yesterday (using my car, which is now officially mine, new license plates and insurance and all); the neighbors' cats that I'm taking care of for ten days really like me; my first [community profile] genretwisting fic is finished and just about ready to post; and I'm well into the next chapter of ItO, thanks to lingering momentum from finishing the last chapter up. So it's not all ruin and despair.

Still, I'm going to be super glad when this week is over. Yeesh.
damkianna: A cap of the Reverend Mother from the Dune miniseries, with accompanying text: "Space cowgirl." (Default)
Home sick today - I'd be annoyed, but I'm too tired, and I suppose it's for the best. I mean, if I'd gotten sick last week, it would have been kind of a disaster, so. It's not so bad this week. ^^

Obviously, it's messed with my writing pace, being asleep until about three hours ago; but I still have a few days, so hopefully that'll still work out okay. The first [community profile] genretwisting fic is literally a scene away from being done, and then one last editing runthrough, and it should be all set. \o/

Now it's time to sleep more. :D
damkianna: A cap of Milo from Disney's Atlantis, with accompanying text: "What is this fuckery?" (What is this fuckery.)
Early update was early! \o/

That's about the only good thing I can say about anything since yesterday evening, unfortunately; today sucked. :P At least this stupid auction thingy is only going to come around once a year. I swear, if somebody sends me one more goddamn updated item list or tells me one more time that I need to add more pictures, I AM GOING TO KILL THEM WITH MY FACE.

... anyway.

The first [community profile] genretwisting fic is a bit of trickery, a climactic fight scene, and a dramatic escape away from being pretty much done. Clearly, time to start outlining the next one! Also, I've already started writing Chapter 12. I think part of the reason these last few chapters seem to be coming so easily is that they haven't changed much since I first started ItO - the middle part needed a lot of reorganizing and reoutlining, but the majority of these last three chapters has been pretty solid since the very beginning. Here's hoping enough outlining of Book Two right now will help that go more quickly, too. :D

Ugh, I am so boring right now, I have no deep thoughts except DIE, AUCTION CATALOG. DIE. :P Partly because I keep missing TV to sleep and stuff. But once the auction's over, I will totally catch up. I have it all planned out: I'm going to wait until it's almost time for a new billing period for the wireless, and then almost max it out the last day, so I don't have to worry about accidentally going over it. There is NO WAY this will fail. >:D
damkianna: A cap of the Reverend Mother from the Dune miniseries, with accompanying text: "Space cowgirl." (Default)
I was a little later coming to work than I'd been hoping, because the car was in turtle mode three-quarters of the way there - not that I can blame it, because the warmest (WARMEST) it got on the drive in was eleven degrees below zero. (The coldest? Twenty-two below. \o?) Oh, Vermont. Sometimes you make me want to wrap myself in flannel and not come out until May.

My first [community profile] genretwisting fic is now 3500 words; I will clearly never achieve true brevity, but maybe I can keep it under 40k. **crosses fingers** Why do I always do this to myself? I'll probably end up working on it a bunch today when I'm supposed to be doing actual work things - my intentions are always good, I never plan to write except here and there when I'm waiting for something to upload, but somehow it never quite works out that way. :D (Of course, when something urgent comes along, I don't just blissfully keep writing, I am not a complete failboat.)

Man, today is going to feel so long. I'm used to lunch being a sign that I'm pretty close to being able to leave, not a sign that I have five more hours to go. D: I'm not ready to be an adult yet, dammit.

But: ItO topped 1,000 views! :D :D :D **happydances**
damkianna: A cap of Helga from Disney's Atlantis, with accompanying text: "You've got to be kidding." (You've got to be kidding.)
So, I may have signed myself up for the Genretwisting Deadline Challenge - A:TLA, of course, plus a side of Burn Notice (after all, I do need to expand my fandoms into the Bs). The odds that I'll finish eighteen fics by mid-March are vanishingly low, especially since there are a couple prompts that I'm just not the right person to pull off. But it was blissful just going through the prompt list and imagining. I've got some decent ideas, and 500 words of one fic already down. Good thing Chapter 11 of ItO is going so swimmingly, or I might feel guilty. :D

I went skating with [personal profile] idriya today - only for about half an hour, but it was already rather cold, though it had not yet plunged to the depths that are predicted for tomorrow. And then I finished watching How To Train Your Dragon with M/[personal profile] daemonelix. It was interesting. ) Anyway, thumbs pretty up. I'm glad I got the chance to see it.

Now, back to the first of my six assigned A:TLA sci-fi AUs. :D I will keep the fics short, I will keep the fics short ...
