all that the summer has given.

Long time no post, but I'm caught up with nearly everything - and we even lost power a couple days ago, which means I finally had a reason to sit down and read an actual dead tree book for a little while. \o/
I am LOVING this show so much, I could just put a big paragraph of "♥" here and that would convey all my feelings just as well as all the blathering I'm about to do. It's possible some of it is a holdover from The Closer, when I was always SO PLEASED just because an ep had Raydor in it and now they all do. \o/
BUT. I'm such a sucker for alienated/closed-off person + person who believes in them and also doesn't take their shit - not even in a romantic way, just in general, and that scene with Raydor and Rusty and that guy who wanted to kick him out of his school was GOLD. The whole subplot is gold; the only thing that would make it better is ifBrenda Sykes a snarky amazing girlfriend were going through it all alongside Sharon. ♥
And Sykes! Ugh, yes - particularly in the most recent episode, my HEART. I love that it was her and Sanchez going in together, and her reply to the guy ("My dad's been waiting his whole life for a situation like this." "Me too.") was just awesome. I was pretty sure they weren't going to have anybody get shot, but I was still on the edge of my seat. /o\ I AM SO EASY FOR THIS SHOW. HELP.
Still watching allllll the WNBA games I can tape, and really enjoying it. I have absolutely no stake in any of the games except my tendency to root for the underdog, so I get all the joy of watching without the stress of being the fan of a single team.
Also, for no particular reason, I ended up with a copy of Delgo, which was really strange to watch. The reviews that popped up when I first googled it were not inaccurate: it is simultaneously weirdly dark, all kinds of massacres and assassinations and shit, and way too light, raising a zillion complicated issues and then skimming over them in favor of a happy ending and a kiss. ???!??!?!!?!!!
I mean, I found the universe, the aesthetics, and the bare bones of the story really really interesting. If you forgive the weird old-video-game-esque badness of the animation, the aesthetics of the world are really cool - it sort of reminded me of Dragon Hunters in that respect. And there are some really fascinating elements in the background, the flying whale thingies and the area with all the floating rocks, the stone magic and the Stone Sage council and on and on and on.
BUT. For the love story to work, neither the Lokni nor the Nohrin can really be the bad guys, so we just breeze right over the colonization and the massacres - all Sedessa's fault! Never mind that the king left everything the way it was and didn't give any land back, he's still an okay dude - and sympathize with both sides. (We'll save a total lack of sympathy for the unnamed "tribes" from the exile lands, because somebody needs to be the hordes of evil troops that nobody cares about.) The stone magic will come out of nowhere with no explanation as to who can do it or how it's learnt, the villain will be a female character who had her wings cut off and uses prostheses and is just evil for the hell of it, and by the end, despite none of the massive social issues really having been resolved in any meaningful way, our main characters will kiss in public and everything will be fine. ???!??!!?!!! I mean, they gave Kyla plenty to do, and the subplot with General Bogardus was actually not badly done, but what the fuck was the rest of that?
It fell down hard in the execution, but somewhere behind that is a really interesting story, and I'm just sorry the folks who made this movie couldn't quite find it. Maybe I'll ask for a little worldbuilding for Yuletide.
I actually finished some stuff, and yet my fannish to-do list has only grown. UNFAIR. Also, Youtube Let's-Plays are the most addictive thing in the world. It's like watching people play Oregon Trail all through my fourth grade lunch period, times ten.
