the way we might wait for a train.

Happy 2015, to everybody celebrating a new year today! I don't know that I even can characterize my 2014 meaningfully, but it held multiple milestones for me personally, good and bad, and I hope I never forget to acknowledge and remember and recognize them—I hope I learned enough from them to make 2015 awesome.
My year in review in fannish terms mostly consists of KATARA KORRA KATARA KORRA KATARA KORRA YULETIDE. \o? Finishing LttE (AT LAST) was a tremendous feeling; the ending of Korra was everything I could reasonably have hoped for. And of course Yuletide reveals were last night!
I wrote four stories this year, in all. My assignment was not in any way what I was expecting to write:
one giant leap (3862 words) by Damkianna
Fandom: The Dig (Video Game)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Maggie Robbins/Boston Low
Characters: Maggie Robbins, Ludger Brink, Boston Low
Additional Tags: Post-Canon
Summary: Two of the Cocytans come with them back to Earth. Post-game tag: after the adventure, they still have to get home. (Gen, with hints of Maggie/Boston.)
I didn't actually offer The Dig this year, but
Three_Headed_Monkey asked for it; it was listed ahead of the fandom we actually matched on in my assignment email, and I saw it and HAD TO. There was zero Dig fic on the AO3 until I posted this (and as of this writing, there's two and Three_Headed_Monkey wrote the other), which makes it a Yuletide fandom if ever there was one. It was hilarious and strange and fascinating to watch an LP of The Dig after all this time (it came out in like 1995, that's TWENTY YEARS AGO)—the request was very open-ended but an idea came to me pretty quickly, and the actual writing went very well, so this was a real delight of an assignment overall. \o/ YAY YULETIDE.
I also ended up writing a few other things.
who sail away (and then come back) (16802 words) by Damkianna
Fandom: Babylon 5: Legend of the Rangers
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: David Martell, Dulann, Sarah Cantrell, Tafeek, Firell, Tirk, Na'Feel, Kitaro Sasaki, Malcolm Bridges
Additional Tags: Backstory, Pre-Canon, Insecurity, Belonging, Yuletide Treat
Summary: One time each member of the Liandra's crew wasn't sure they were in the right place—and one time they all knew they were. (Covers several years pre-canon through to a point near the end of the movie; some violence, not graphic.)
For
Azar/
azarsuerte! I love writing treats and always try to write at least one, and this year, this was The Treat. I was going to write this treat, okay, NO MATTER WHAT. This treat HAD TO HAPPEN. And it did, though I wasn't originally planning on it being 17,000 words long. I was SO into Legend of the Rangers back in the day, I can't even explain it. Is it an objectively good TV movie/failed pilot? I HAVE NO IDEA, but my sister and I watched it so many times after it first aired that I probably could have recited it. Watching it again to canon-review for this treat was like getting to visit an old friend I hadn't seen in years, and it was just wonderful. This is all my feelings about Legend of the Rangers in textual form and probably reads like it, and I'm so grateful to azarsuerte for giving me a good excuse to write it.
children of celestial fuckin' light (1496 words) by Damkianna
Fandom: Constantine (2005)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: John Constantine/Angela Dodson
Characters: John Constantine, Angela Dodson
Additional Tags: Minor Injuries, Caretaking, Post-Canon, Yuletide Treat
Summary: Angela doesn't go to the warehouse on the corner of 7th without backup, as she explains to John afterward. She does go alone, but that's not the same thing. She knew he would get there before anything happened. She's psychic. (Post-canon: after the implied separation at the end of the movie, John comes back.)
For
turtlebook! I saved turtlebook's letter very early on, because I really like Keanu Reeves, I really like Rachel Weisz, I really like Tilda Swinton, and I would watch Djimon Hounsou watch paint dry, okay, so I loved this movie—god help me, I know. SORRY, ACTUAL HELLBLAZER FANS. A prompt for stitching up each other's wounds plus liking John/Angela was enough to make this scene-and-a-quarter just appear in my head. Which isn't at all how I usually write! But it seemed to work this time. :D
Five Simple Rules for Being a Teenage Mermaid (5256 words) by Damkianna
Fandom: H2O: Just Add Water
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Emma Gilbert, Cleo Sertori, Rikki Chadwick, Bella Hartley
Additional Tags: Friendship, Magical Accidents, 5 Times, Yuletide Treat
Summary: Or: five times being a mermaid has suddenly and unexpectedly been a problem (and one reason everything's always worked out fine in the end). Moments scattered over S1-S3 + post-canon with all four girls.
For
weatherscenes, who asked for all four girls and prompted with "day-to-day complications of being a mermaid"—and I know some people think 5-times fic is overdone, but this request was so well-suited to it that I couldn't help it. The road that brought me to actually watch H2O is winding—it's
havocthecat's fault, in the end, for mentioning it in the comments back when I first started watching The Secret Circle, and I'm glad I did if only so I could write this, which was a blast (and allowed me to tack on the ending I always wanted the show to have, in the guise of post-canon).
And!
damask_and_dark was the author of the transcendent and beautiful the moon a black hole in the blaze of night, which was my absolutely incredible main gift and everything I could not have known to hope for when I prompted for armored Snow White at the head of an army, breaking Ravenna out of her box. Gloriously in-character and yet so very kind to both Ravenna and Snow White, with the happy ending the movie couldn't have given Ravenna. ♥
As if that weren't enough to make my Yuletide all by itself, I also received the delightful post-B13:U Blood on the Dance Floor from
gamerfic, who took my admittedly off-the-wall request for Lola/Tao (they don't even meet in canon!) and went MARVELOUS places with it! HOW AM I SO LUCKY. \o/
