This week is messing with my head so much - in a chronological way, not an anxiety way. I just cannot seem to keep track of what day it is. :P

But mostly I am here to record my ~thoughts. My last three Netflixes (Netflixen? Netflices?) were, put together, the entirety of The 10th Kingdom (2000). Honestly, I got a bit annoyed with it sometimes; there were traces of a more serious story in there that I think I would have enjoyed more, but they kept getting shunted aside for the sake of some off-the-wall bit of humor that was too ... goofy? ridiculous? for me to like. I mean, I love funny things, but I go for wry-funny or sarcastic-funny, not cracky-funny. For example, the beginning of the third part seemed like it was getting more serious, in a good way! And then the singing mushrooms showed up. :/

Also, I didn't like Wolf as much as I think you need to in order to really enjoy the whole thing; not that I hated him, but he seriously screwed up in Kissingtown! Like, immensely! And then Virginia was the one who had to apologize later? She's not the one who blew the only chance the person she purportedly loved had to get home so that she could pay for THE MOST ANNOYING RING IN THE ENTIRE WORLD. D:< Seriously, that scene made me want to punch Wolf in the face. "I spent it on you!" No, you spent it on a giant cake and a gondola and that goddamn ring INSTEAD OF THE THING YOU KNEW SHE ACTUALLY SERIOUSLY WANTED. **stabbity** Spending money on someone does not make up for lying!

... ahem. Also, the gypsies in the woods were pretty fail. I fastforwarded through a lot of that part, because, no. (Aside from the gypsies and the trolls, and possibly some nameless background people, everybody was white. D:)

But! I absolutely loved the historical details of the kingdoms, and Snow White was AWESOME and Christine was AWESOME in a way where I totally teared up at the end and the Swamp Witch, omg. That was, augh - that ending to Snow White always creeped the shit out of me. But, yes, of course I was totally entranced by the great queens of the past who founded the kingdoms, and how basically the only other major historical figure was the Swamp Witch pre-swamp. /o\ Yay, women! I am so predictable. And I am glad beyond the telling of it that they set Christine up as a Snow White redux instead of letting her just be dead. The flower blooming against her glove was a lovely touch. (I do think it was odd that they didn't have flashbacks of what Virginia could remember of her mother sooner, though, considering how important that was by the end.)

So, yeah, the backstory was awesome, but it felt to me like the execution of the actual main story fell a little short. It was like Pride & Prejudice & Zombies; I am deeply enamored of the concept, and some of the things they did with it were totally fabulous, but they didn't do it the way I wanted right. Like, if they had only committed to it properly, I would have been totally sold; but instead they kept backing off and turning it into a joke. And they didn't have to! And if they hadn't I bet I would have completely adored it! But they did. :/ Also, I'm not sure why they called it "The 10th Kingdom", because ... that's really not even a little what it was about, in the end. o.O

But I will probably keep an eye out for it next Yuletide, just in case.
