Our Christmas was Star Wars and our New Year was Man from UNCLE, so I have had a lovely shiny fast-moving holiday season! :D
As it turns out, I received the lovely Serendipity (25k Irulan/Chani AU! BE STILL MY HEART) from
Tamoline! I have no idea what I did to deserve such a tremendous gift, but it's everything I could possibly have hoped for and then some. ♥ And! My ecstatically wonderful Hellboy OT3 gift, some bright equation, was the work of none other than
Liviapenn, which I was not expecting AT ALL. (I regret absolutely none of my comment's effusiveness, but I do feel a little silly. Like, of course it was great, it was Liviapenn.)
And! I wrote:
The Sword in the Stone (14148 words) by Damkianna
Fandom: Crusade
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Dureena Nafeel, Matthew Gideon, Galen (Crusade), Sarah Chambers, John Matheson, Max Eilerson, Original Characters
Additional Tags: Alien Technology, Psychic Violence, Post-Canon, End of the World
Summary: Lieutenant Matheson had a headache. Post-canon: the crew of the Excalibur discovers a magic sword, Galen is cryptic, and Dureena has a lot of feelings.
I offered Crusade COMPLETELY on a whim, having had something of a B5 renaissance this year, and lucked out by matching to
ArisTGD, who had an inspiring but also extremely flexible prompt about Dureena, Galen, and a sword. :D The more I thought about this one, the more I wanted to make kind of an episode out of it; and I did my best to pack it full of JMS-y themes (religion! ends and beginnings! weighing costs and making choices!). It was a delight to write and a great excuse to rewatch the show (again), and basically I'm just very lucky with my assignments. \o/ MAN YULETIDE IS AWESOME.
And then! I also wrote four treats! TAKE THAT, ME FROM LAST YEAR. (Next year, of course, I'll have to aim for five.)
Troubled Waters (5072 words) by Damkianna
Fandom: The Bone Key - Sarah Monette
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Kyle Murchison Booth/Original Male Character
Characters: Kyle Murchison Booth, Claudia Coburn, Original Character
Additional Tags: Psychological Horror, Implied/Referenced Suicide, Case Fic, POV First Person, Yuletide Treat
Summary: I was halfway through the process of cataloguing and archiving a donation when Miss Coburn knocked at the door. Perhaps inherently AU: a happy ending, at least by implication, for Kyle Murchison Booth.
For
soupytwist! I was in no way expecting to write for this fandom this year, but I browsed Dear Author letters for it anyway, and what should I find among them but a request for "a happy ending for Booth"? The unlikeliest of all possible outcomes, canonically, but COMPLETELY IRRESISTIBLE to me, because I ALWAYS want characters to have happy endings, okay. Always. This was a double challenge to me because a) horror really isn't my thing most of the time and b) I had to invent an OMC who might plausibly both like and be liked by Booth. D:! But I did my best and I'm pleased with how it turned out!
we floated there along with clouds (1991 words) by Damkianna
Fandom: Donovan's Reef (1963)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Amelia Dedham, Lelani Dedham
Additional Tags: Backstory, Missing Scene, Awkward Conversations, Yuletide Treat
Summary: The trip to the canyons of Hakeakaloha for a Christmas tree had made for easily the strangest day Amelia had spent on the island. (Or: between the Christmas tree scene and Miss Lafleur's performance, Amelia invites Lelani to go swimming.)
For
Beatrice_Otter, who's been requesting this fandom for Yuletide for I don't even know how long. This has to be at least the third time I've seen it while glancing at her letter for other things, and this year I finally snapped! I found Donovan's Reef (don't ask how) and I watched it; and once I had, this missing scene basically wrote itself. :D I especially loved that I could write this from Amelia's POV—Lelani is her half-sister but Amelia doesn't know it, which shades all their interactions in a really interesting way. Anyway! It was a joy to make a perennial Yuletide wish come true. :)
and rose again (to my true love and my dance) (7299 words) by Damkianna
Fandom: Roundtable Rival - Lindsey Stirling (Music Video)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: First Dancing Girl/Second Dancing Girl, The Violinist/First Dancing Girl/Second Dancing Girl
Characters: The Violinist (Roundtable Rival), First Dancing Girl (Roundtable Rival), Second Dancing Girl (Roundtable Rival)
Additional Tags: Threesome - F/F/F, Polyamory, Loyalty, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Music, Magic, Yuletide Treat
Summary: They say you can work nothing with dancing by itself—nothing at all, most likely, and surely nothing as will stick. (Backstory fic, sort of? Set pre-video: in a steampunk wild west where music is magic, a violinist upholds justice and falls in love with a pair of dancers.)
For
egelantier, and this, by contrast, was RECKLESSLY SELF-INDULGENT. /o\ I'm just lucky that egelantier likes all the same things in fiction that I do, so reckless self-indulgence for me ends up being a good gift for them. :D As the author's notes say, this owes a HUGE debt to astolat's Madrigals and Misadventures, because that's the first thing I thought of when I watched this music video and then I just couldn't shake it. The rest of the worldbuilding kind of exploded in a completely different direction, and I had an absolute blast looking up westerns and reading the True Grit script, trying to get the flavor right. (And I hope I succeeded!)
The Bridge of Souls (25294 words) by Damkianna
Fandom: Veritas: The Quest
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Calvin Banks/Nikko Zond
Characters: Calvin Banks, Nikko Zond, Juliet Droil, Maggie Hayes, Vincent Siminou, Solomon Zond
Additional Tags: Post-Canon, Canon-Typical Violence, Kidnapping, Huddling For Warmth, Soul Bond, Magical Artifacts, Yuletide Treat
Summary: "Yeah, yeah, yeah," Nikko said, interrupting. "Don't go off alone, don't fall in any pits, don't touch anything that looks like it could kill you, don't touch anything that doesn't look like it could kill you because it probably could anyway." Post-finale trope bingo: Nikko and Cal get kidnapped, huddle for warmth, form a soulbond, and discover they're sort of into each other and also can maybe save the world.
I had my HEART SET on writing
carolinecrane a treat this year—like, COME HELL OR HIGH WATER. And I'm familiar with both Touching Evil and My Bodyguard (because of carolinecrane, shocker), so of course the practical thing to do was pick up a completely new fandom by marathoning Veritas on Youtube during signups. GOOD IDEA, SELF. *hands* This is basically three-quarters of carolinecrane's likes list/Veritas prompts in a single story; I outlined the hell out of it, and then wrote the whole thing in about a week and a day, and thank god for
idriya or I don't know who I would ever have gotten to check it for sense. Veritas is a tiny dead terrible show and I kind of love it, and this was ridiculously fun to write—and I am so glad carolinecrane liked it, because otherwise I can't even imagine what a slog it would have been for her to get through. /o\
This Yuletide was so fantastic—and there are so many stories I still haven't read, augh!
