I cannot understand how I can simultaneously have so much time on my hands and still take so long to get caught up on TV. /o\
It's been a while since I posted aboutanything this, so let's just make a list.
THINGS I LIKE
- Charlie. I don't really like that 1.02 manufactured a big dilemma over killing when she'd already shot a guy through the chest in the pilot, but aside from that I'm really fond of Charlie! She's a good person without being a stupid one - I was so, so afraid that the fall down the hill in 1.02 was real, but she was actually tricking not-Nate \o/ - and she's kind but not timid. (Not that timid is bad, but it would be hard to buy in this scenario.) When Miles yells at her she yells at him right back in 1.03 and 1.04, and she doesn't back off when he implies that she's being naive in 1.03 or when he's snide in 1.04. And hidden abandonment issues! So much determination not to do the same thing to her brother! So many things about this show are still stupid, IMO, but Charlie is ♥, and so is ...
- NORA. :D :D :D :D :D Yes yes yes. Of course when she and Miles were both swordfighting with bad guys in 1.02, she had to be the one to get hurt - yeah, yeah, it was plot-important that they see her rebel tattoo, whatever, there were other ways that conversation could have started. BUT ANYWAY. NORA. I think maybe she and Charlie even managed a Bechdel-passer in 1.03, and while I have mixed feelings about the miscarriage backstory, I like the lead-in, and how unapologetic she is for everything, how she yells at Miles and doesn't let him bullshit her in 1.04. NORA.
- For a beautiful, shining ten minutes or so, there were three ladies in the main party and only two dudes. \o/ YES PLEASE. Too bad not-Nate showed up and Maggie was murdered, but hey, there was no way it was going to last.
THINGS I LIKE BUT WHAT ARE THEY DOING???
- Grace! Still important, hopefully going to become more so ... except they ended 1.02 with her getting attacked by a big huge guy with some kind of freaky tazer, and she was absent for all of 1.03 and 1.04, 1.03 having been a third just Maggie and Google Guy hanging out in her empty house. AWESOME. >:(
-Juliet Rachel! She is still alive, which I asked for after watching the pilot and was miraculously granted - except we saw that she was still alive in a scene that ended with Monroe grabbing her around the neck and threatening to hurt or kill her unless she told him everything she knew. By implication, then, they had some sort of deal worked out where Monroe let her alone - she knew who he was, she wasn't surprised to see him; and yet the moment we get to see is the moment where whatever balance of power there was is upset, and Monroe has the advantage. And then in 1.04, it's pretty much all vaguely sexual threats and explicitly physical threats. AWESOME. >:(
- Maggie! Fuck them so much for killing her, but I'm glad they gave her flashbacks with 1.04. I automatically favor anyone who gets up in Miles's face because I could not give less of a crap about his whining; I also could not give less of a crap about Dead Ben, but I like that Maggie had the chance to tell her own story. Before they had her die for no reason, but hey. I should have guessed that the episode when she started having a lot of lines would be the episode where she died. AWESOME. >:(
- This is more of a thing I could like except no: I understand the appeal in a writerly sense of forcing Danny and Tom Neville to talk to each other one on one, but BETTER DIALOGUE. This shit is like one step up from "from my point of view, the Jedi are evil". COME ON. Thank god they got Giancarlo Esposito, he delivered the rare better lines really well.
THINGS I (STILL) DON'T UNDERSTAAAAAND, WHAT
- The "militia". I don't get why they call it that, I don't understand what the hell Monroe is thinking - seriously, WHY is he not setting himself up as the second coming of the US of A? I can only assume it's because it makes him more ~evil~ if he goes around taking people's guns and burning American flags, but it MAKES NO SENSE. Even if you're going to be a totalitarian douchebag, I would still think it would be easier to get people on your side if you talk the talk, and I don't understand why he wouldn't.
- It's a little bit hilarious to me that they'd use Nora as their mouthpiece in 1.02 and part of 1.03 for all their "yay America, the rebels are ~patriots". If anyone has a good reason to use this reset button to work for the founding of a better society than the United States was, it's a woman of color.
- The plotting on this show is so atrocious. I think 1.02 was maybe the least bad, because, seriously, 1.03, we're going to dig our way out through a cinderblock wall in a matter of hours??? Are you kidding me. I mean, yes, it didn't work, but that's because it was a terrible idea. And 1.04, some random guy with trained attack dogs just ... shows up to cause problems. Okay then.
- It is impossible for me to believe that the militia managed to get to whatever antique steamboats people had and then destroyed them, instead of keeping them and setting up people with the knowhow to make more. BULLSHIT. At the very least, without any cars except maybe antiques, being able to get up and down rivers quickly would be really useful. COME ON.
Basically everything about this show, except the family flashback stuff, would work so so so much better for me if it had been like a hundred years since the blackout. I'd buy the total disintegration of society, the scarcity of bullets made well enough to work in modern guns, some back and forth about what the US was really like, &c. &c., and honestly I think it would be a lot more interesting. It would also be more interesting if we knew anything about what was happening in other places, but I'm assuming the odds are against that unless the other place is somewhere our plucky band of heroes ends up going. I may keep watching just because a) there could be more Charlie/Nora moments and I'd ship that in a hot second, and b) whatever explanation they have for this bullshit anti-electricity field, I WANT TO HEAR IT; but damn, show. One step forward and four steps back.
Major Crimes is like the most amazing vidded kidfic I have ever seen where also some crimes happen, and basically all I need is for Brenda to hear about it and decide to move in to help. Or Sykes. That would work also. Sharon's face in the last episode, oh my god. ♥ That's all I've got.
And the WNBA, omg. I'm still like ten games behind, but I am slowly developing favorite teams - the Sparks, in particular, because: Ogwumike, Parker, Toliver, Beard, Thompson ... is there anyone on that team not to like? I also have a soft spot for the Fever (is it wrong to ship Catchings and Douglas just because Douglas had her arm around Catchings's seat when they were sitting together? I HOPE NOT) and the Mystics. And, of course, the Mercury, who even without Taurasi are pretty amazing. Basically I just love watching women's basketball, and if there's no RPF out there I will be so sad.
Lingering auction fic? DONE AT LAST. Now there is only the terror of the winner not liking it to get through, and then I'll have discharged my responsibilities and will be free to work Katara without feeling guilty. \o/ So many things to finish, so little time before NaNo!
