Whyyyyyyyy am I so awful at rating things without sex in them? /o\ My violence gauge is so much murkier than my sexytimes gauge, and I hardly ever think to rate by use of swearing - my Avatar Blue People fics are like one-third "fuck" by weight, and yet somehow they feel more G-rated to me than Kuei's mom does. ??? What even am I doing.

Anyway! No OUaT new this week, but I never said anything about last week's, so, in brief: OW. WHAT. WHO. WHO IS WRITING THIS DIALOGUE. "Fearless bravery"? WHAT. I can't even blame James or Abigail for their line delivery there, because, SO BAD. I also cannot say that I care much for the chain-yanking fest that David/Mary Margaret is turning into - I am still fond of them both individually, but the way their plotline is getting dragged out in Maine-verse is ... unappealing to me.

Upside: I hear we will be getting the Ruby/Red Riding Hood episode soon, which I am looking forward to! I hope it is appropriately awesome.

And I also recently got my next Netflix movie: Banlieue 13. Which I sort of adore - they are not subtle about the "look look parkour!" aspect, but it was essentially The Eagle crossed with Serenity with a patina of The Losers, and that is not a combination I can resist. It actually worked better for me emotionally than The Eagle did, because Marcus-Damien and Esca-Leïto could set themselves against a third and genuinely worse thing, instead of, idek, "Everybody lost a dad but somehow it's still more okay for Britons to die than Romans!"

And LOLA WAS THE BEST. Of course I am not a fan of villains using female characters as emotional leverage against male characters, but I felt like Banlieue 13 was actually pretty low on manpain. The camera's treatment of Lola did not seem especially pervy, even when she was chained up - it seemed to me as though more loving treatment was given to Leïto's abs than to Lola. And being chained up and drugged did not prevent her from continuing to be awesome; in point of fact, if it weren't for her tackling Damien at the last minute, the whole banlieue would have been doomed. And her driving! Her gun-grabbing! Despite everything that happened to her, only one scene involved guys grabbing her ass and whistling at her, and she came back with their boss at gunpoint and had some creative revenge! It was not a Bechdel-passer with just Lola, but it was better than many an action movie I've seen.

The other intriguing thing for me was the French. I'm sure this is true of ... almost any movie with subtitles, but I can only detect it when the movie's in French and I therefore have a chance in hell of understanding the actual dialogue. The subtitles were so weird! Like a third of the time a literal translation (or close to it) would have made perfect sense, and yet instead the lines were written out completely differently! At least twice, it was genuinely funnier in French. There's a scene where Leïto and Damien are trying to defeat a particularly huge thug in their race against the bomb's countdown, and they refer to him as "un cadeau" from the big bad. In the end, they beat him because Leïto winds a cable around him - as a reference to the cable tying him up, and to the earlier dialogue, Leïto nods at the guy to Damien, and says, "Cadeau."

The English subtitle at that moment? "Hey! He's all yours." ??? Why would you ever change that so much? I mean, I know sometimes a more figurative translation can better convey the real meaning of a phrase, but as far as I can tell, that translation only reduces meaning. I'm going to need to watch it again with the subtitles off, who knows how many other things are different.

And, to make myself feel better:

- Both fics for [livejournal.com profile] seta_suzume (other can wait a bit)
- First story for green_wing and get in touch re: numbers
- Murphy/Luccio Eagle fusion for genretwisting - getting there!
- Yue/Zuko arranged marriage fic so idriya will leave me alone
- That one Newsies demon possession story
- LttE! (Aside from chapter, also update timeline, character notes, maps, outlines) - getting there!

Yeaaaah, my patience in OuaT, it is wearing thin. I hope the Red episode is good! The profusion of female characters with agency is currently the only thing keeping me watching.
